2022 Adult Spotted Lanternfly Status in PA Vineyards: November 11
The Penn State Grape and Wine Team sends out a weekly survey to learn more about the magnitude and severity of adult spotted lanternfly (SLF) populations throughout Pennsylvania vineyards. Twenty-three growers reported the absence of adult SLF in their vineyards, while nineteen growers reported the presence of adult SLF in their vineyards between November 4 to November 10, 2022.
Below is a map showing counties with at least one vineyard that reported the presence of adult SLF. At least one vineyard in Allegheny, Armstrong, Berks, Bucks, Butler, Chester, Clarion, Cumberland, Erie, Fayette, Fulton, Huntington, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Snyder, Somerset,  Sullivan, Union, and Wyoming counties reported adult SLF absence.

Out of the twenty-three Pennsylvania vineyards that reported adult SLF absence, five vineyards reported that adult SLF became absent after no intervention, and one vineyard reported that adult SLF became absent after insecticide application. Six of the nineteen vineyards that reported adult SLF presence had higher adult SLF populations than the previous reporting period. Adult SLF populations decreased in thirteen vineyards, either after no intervention (seven vineyards) or after insecticide application (six vineyards). Â
Most grape growers reported that adult SLF existed in less than 5% of their vineyard acreage. However, adult SLF existed in over 10% of the vineyard acreage in at least one vineyard in Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, and York counties. Adult SLF density was below ten insects per vine in most vineyards where adult SLF presence was documented; however, one vineyard in Chester county and one vineyard in Lancaster county had the highest adult SLF density (21–30 insects per vine) for this reporting period.
We thank all stakeholders for their participation in this survey! Please retake the survey weekly so that we can report updates on a continuing basis. We estimate the survey will take approximately three minutes to complete.
