2022 Adult Spotted Lanternfly Status in PA Vineyards: October 21
The Penn State Grape and Wine Team sends out a weekly survey to learn more about the magnitude and severity of adult spotted lanternfly (SLF) populations throughout Pennsylvania vineyards. Eleven growers reported the absence of adult SLF in their vineyards; twenty-six growers reported the presence of adult SLF in their vineyards between October 14 to October 21, 2022.
Below is a map showing counties with at least one vineyard that reported the presence of adult SLF. At least one vineyard in Allegheny, Beaver, Bucks, Butler, Centre, Fayette, Fulton, Snyder, Wayne, and York counties reported adult SLF absence.

The adult SLF population has increased in at least one vineyard in Cumberland, Lebanon, Luzerne, Northumberland, Perry, and Schuylkill counties, while adult SLF populations have decreased in seventeen Pennsylvania vineyards. The reported decrease in adult SLF populations occurred after an insecticide was applied to eight vineyards, while adult SLF populations decreased without grower intervention in nine vineyards.
At least one vineyard in Berks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Northampton, Perry, Schuylkill, and York counties reported that adult SLF existed in 30% or more of their vineyard acreage. Adult SLF density was below ten insects per vine in over half of the twenty-six vineyards where adult SLF presence was documented; the highest adult SLF density was above ten insects per vine in at least one vineyard in Chester, Lancaster, Northampton, and Schuylkill.
We thank all stakeholders for their participation in this survey! Please retake the survey weekly so that we can report updates on a continuing basis. We estimate the survey will take approximately three minutes to complete.
