This second brief report summarizes survey results received between September 21 and 29, 2022.

The Penn State Grape and Wine Team recently sent out a survey to learn more about the magnitude and severity of adult spotted lanternfly (SLF) populations throughout Pennsylvania vineyards. Twenty-four growers reported the absence of adult SLF in their vineyards; thirty growers reported the presence of adult SLF in their vineyards.

Below is a map showing counties with at least one vineyard that reported the presence of adult SLF. At least one vineyard in Armstrong, Bucks, Butler, Centre, Fayette, Fulton, Huntingdon, Lancaster, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Northumberland, Perry, Pike, Somerset, Union, Wayne, Washington, Westmoreland, Wyoming counties reported adult SLF absence.

At least one vineyard in Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Northampton, and York counties reported that adult SLF existed in 50% or more of their vineyard acreage.  At least one vineyard in Dauphin, Lancaster, Luzerne, and York counties reported that the most severe adult SLF density was over thirty per vine.

Growers reported that the adult SLF population has increased at vineyards in Adams, Allegheny, Berks, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Montgomery, Perry, and York counties. If adult SLF populations have often decreased, it was due to grower intervention (i.e., insecticide application).  At least one vineyard in Bucks, Armstrong, and Luzerne counties reported that the adult SLF population has decreased without insecticide application.

We thank all stakeholders for their participation in this survey! Please retake the survey weekly so that we can report updates on a continuing basis. We estimate the survey will take approximately three minutes to complete.

Please see the Spotted Lanternfly Management in Vineyards fact sheet for information about SLF management in vineyards.
