Traditional methods for industry to identify natural gas-rich area in the Appalachian shale region has been based on a variety of expensive geological tests and current well production data.  Penn State researchers  recently detailed  a method of exploring natural gas just based on using wells production logs from over 5,600 existing wells to determine available gas in untapped regions. An interactive website was also created to show historical production data, which can be useful for both industry and property owners. More information on the research can be found at "Researchers unearth cost-effective method for finding shale gas" and in the research article published in the SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering journal.
