- Hello, I'm Phil Hoy with Penn State Extension.

I'm the risk and volunteer management coordinator, and I work with developing policies for programs that involve youth and adults.

The 4-H program is the youth program for Penn State Extension.

All three of my children are involved in the 4-H program.

Most people see what 4-H projects the members have completed at the county fair.

4-H clubs meet year-round where members learn life skills like leadership and citizenship, as well as instructions from 4-H volunteers of methods to complete their 4-H projects.

All 4-H projects provide an opportunity for career exploration.

Today, my children are working on their 4-H projects, including working with their sheep and cooking.

My daughters are learning about different flours used in baking.

- All-purpose flour is used for breads.

Self-rising flour, it has salt and baking power already included into the flour.

And cake flour is finely milled to create a delicate texture for cakes.

- [Phil] Instead of using a box cake mix, my daughters will be making a cake from scratch.

This helps them understand how ingredients interact with each other.

It also gives them an opportunity to have fun with a recipe by trying different ingredients.

My children started raising sheep four years ago.

Since then, they have grown their flock from three to 18 sheep.

Each year, they breed their ewes and raise lambs for breeding or to be sold at the market.

My daughter is interested in cooking and is considering becoming a chef.

Working with raw ingredients helps them to be creative and adjust the recipe like a professional chef would do.

As the flock grew, my son's knowledge and interest in sheep has also grown.

He will continue to raise sheep beyond his years in 4-H.

His plans are to establish a flock to provide meat, wool, and lambs for consumers.

4-H members will continue to work on their projects to make the best better, the 4-H motto.

Thanks to all the 4-H volunteers for helping to raise the next generation of chefs, farmers, scientists, and more.
