NEWA Carbohydrate Model Run for May 13, 2021

All sites, but one, recommend increasing rates of chemical thinner from your normal rate for the upcoming week.

Some sites do not predict optimum fruit size based on GDD calculations to accumulate from 200 to 250 degree days during the next 7 days. Those sites are primarily outside of the south-central and southeastern areas of the state. A reminder that the data in the tables and these predictions are for Gala. Cultivars that have earlier or later green tip and/or full bloom dates may have slightly different GDD levels. It is best to measure fruit size for the different cultivars.

Some sites have maximum temperatures reaching into the 70s but not all. Predicted high temperatures will be most favorable next Tuesday and Wednesday. Of course, the further the predictions are away from today the less reliable they are. With the lower high temperatures, the use of carbaryl may give a better response than a PGR thinning material 6-BA.
