Based on predicted growing degree days fruit size for Gala is too large. This does not mean that later blooming cultivars may still be responsive to chemical thinners. You need to determine the average fruit size for later blooming cultivars. Last week’s temperatures were favorable for a good response, with most areas having highs in the mid to upper 80s. Today’s temperatures were more seasonable across the state due to cloud cover and the chance of rain showers. Wednesday’s temperatures are predicted to reach into the mid to upper 80s.
