The Soybean Diseases workbook is an excellent resource that will help you learn about disease identification and management strategies for the diseases that affect soybeans in Pennsylvania. A brief description of various available resources is also provided in the workbook. You should be able to read through the workbook and take the quiz in one hour.

A successfully completed workbook will count as pesticide recertification credits only ONCE in the lifetime of the applicator.

Specific topics include

  • Plant disease basics: Scouting, Identification, Filling Out a Plant Disease Clinic Submission Form, Abiotic Factors, and Identifying Common Soybean Diseases.
  • Seedling diseases (Fusarium Root Rot, Phytophthora Root Rot, Pythium Seedling Blight, Rhizoctonia Seedling Blight, and Management Decisions);
  • Foliar Diseases (Bacterial Blight, Cercospora Leaf Blight, Downy Mildew of Soybean, Frogeye Leaf Spot, Septoria Brown Spot, and Management Decisions);
  • Stem and Late Season Diseases (Anthracnose Stem Blight, Brown Stem Rot, Pod and Stem Blight, Stem Canker, Sudden Death Syndrome, White Mold/Sclerotinia Stem Rot, and Management Decisions); and
  • Plant-parasitic Nematodes (Soybean Cyst Nematode).

What will you learn?

To earn two Private Category or Category 01 and 18 credits, you must follow these steps:

  1. Read the workbook thoroughly and work through the activities.
  2. Find the quiz sheet; clearly print your name, address, business name (if applicable), date of birth, and certification number; and then read and sign the disclaimer.
  3. Answer the questions on the quiz sheet. You must correctly answer at least 7 out of 10 questions to pass.
  4. Return the quiz in the postage-paid addressed envelope.
  5. Once received, the quiz will be graded. If you pass the quiz, you will receive a completion certificate in the mail. If you fail the quiz, you will receive another quiz in the mail. You can take the quiz a total of three times.

Once you pass the quiz, we will include your information in a report that will be sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) at the end of the month, per PDA's guidelines for submitting verification of completions. Please be aware that the process from the time a quiz is mailed back to Penn State and graded, a report is submitted, and credits are added may take from three to six weeks.
