Pesticide Applicator Short Course (Core | Cats. 06, 07, 23) will help build a foundation of knowledge about the safe and proper handling and use of pesticides. This course prepares professionals in a classroom-style setting to take the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture certified pesticide applicator's exam.
Topics covered in the study materials will be reinforced to prepare applicators to take the Pennsylvania certification exam. New applicators are not required to attend the class before taking the exam; however, it may help you prepare.
Certification Exam Study Materials
Study materials are not included with the registration fee. All participants are responsible for obtaining their own Core and Category certification examination training materials for the class.
Order your training packets in advance to make sure they arrive in time for you to use during the course. If you are planning to use study packets that were previously purchased, please be aware some materials were updated. Please be sure your study materials include the updated manuals.Â

Preregistration is required!
- Commercial Applicators - Those employed applying pesticides to customer’s properties (i.e., those who apply pesticides for hire)
- Public Applicators - Those employed by the state, a municipality, a public school district, or whose employer is funded by public money
- Private Applicators - Those who intend to purchase and apply restricted use pesticides to property they or their employer own or rent for the production of an agricultural commodity, including nursery and greenhouse
- Core:Training and testing on pesticide safety and regulations is required for every certified applicator
- Category 06: Ornamental and Shade Trees - Required for applicators treating trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants in residential and commercial landscapes
- Category 07: Lawn and Turf - Required for applicators treating lawn and turf areas
- Category 23: Parks and School Pest Control - Required for applicators applying pesticides in a campground or recreational area of a public or private park, or on elementary or secondary school property

You understand that Penn State has issued rules and precautions which follow, or may in some cases exceed, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. You agree that it is your sole responsibility to follow these protocols and acknowledge that failure to do so may result in removal from the Program.
As of July 7, 2022, this guidance includes basic health, safety, and sanitation measures (staying home when sick, washing/sanitizing hands often, etc.) in addition to wearing a face mask while in healthcare facilities and certain research facilities and labs.
Per CDC guidance, Penn State may impose additional or alternative requirements, including masking at certain locations, depending on community spread at the Program's location. You agree to comply with any directive from Penn State representatives regarding masking or other mitigation measures while participating in the Program.
You must adhere to these protocols regardless of vaccination status.

You agree you will not participate in the Program if you are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test or if you recently: (i) have been diagnosed with COVID-19; (ii) have experienced any symptom of illness which may be associated with COVID-19; or, (iii) have been in close contact with anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, is awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test, or has exhibited any symptom of illness which may be associated with COVID-19 or any of its variants.
- If you fall into any of the above categories, you may nevertheless participate in the Program if:
- more than five days have passed since your last close contact or symptom; and,
- you have tested negative for COVID-19 on or after the five-day mark.

You acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and your understanding that, even with adherence to all preventative measures, including vaccination, there is risk that you may become exposed to and/or contract COVID-19. You assume any and all risk of such exposure or infection and acknowledge that it may result in personal injury, illness, severe complications, permanent disability, and/or death.

If a workshop or conference is at maximum capacity, can I be added to a waitlist?

As spots become available, we offer them "first come, first served." If a spot becomes available, you will be contacted using the information you provided.
