Farm and food businesses today are hiring more teenagers amidst workforce shortages. Working with young people requires a specialized managerial skill set and an understanding of the values that motivate them. Join us along with the LEAF Project for Retail Farm Market Peer Exchange: Working with Teens to learn how to effectively communicate with and manage younger employees.

Team members of the LEAF Project will share their experiences and strategies for developing motivated and passionate teenage leaders. We will also listen to video clips from LEAF Project teens about their perspectives on work. Finally, we will open the floor for a facilitated discussion between attendees and our speakers to allow all attendees to ask questions, share their own experiences, and learn from one another.

About the LEAF Project

The LEAF Project cultivates youth leaders from diverse backgrounds through meaningful work in the food system. Executive Director Heidi Witmer grew up in a farming family, where she managed both educational and production vegetable farms in Maine and Vermont. Heidi brings 15 years of experience in the youth development field. She lives on the LEAF Farm, a small-scale diversified vegetable farm in Perry County.

Funding for the Retail Farm Market School series was made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service through grant 21FMPPA1052. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA.
