The Field and Forage Crops Team Is Here to Help
Penn State Extension, previously called Penn State Cooperative Extension Service, is rooted in agriculture. However, the scope of Penn State Extension is dynamic, and has grown to adapt to the demands of our society, giving birth to additional areas beyond agriculture, where access to science-based information is required. Currently, Penn State Extension is focused on seven areas:
- Agronomy and Natural Resources: Agronomy, Farm Safety, Pesticide Education, Bioenergy, Forestry and Urban Forestry, and Water Quality and Quantity.
- Horticulture: Master Gardener, Green Industry and Infrastructure, Grape Profitability and Sustainability, Tree Fruit Profitability and Sustainability, Vegetable Profitability and Sustainability
- Food Safety and Quality: Consumer Food Safety, Food Safety Modernization Act, Industrial Food Safety and Quality, and Retail and Food Service.
- Food Families and Health: Family Well-being, Nutrition, Diet, Health and Wellness
- Energy, Entrepreneurship and Community Development: Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Community Development, New and Beginning Farmers, Business Management/Marketing and Shale Gas
- Animal Systems: Dairy, Equine, Livestock, Poultry and Farm Animal Welfare.
- 4-H Youth Development: Science, Volunteer Management and Development, and Positive Youth Development
The Field and Forage Crops Team, or Agronomy Team, includes extension educators, extension associates, and Penn State Faculty with different areas of expertise that include grain crop production, forage production, weed science, soil fertility and health, entomology, plant pathology, sustainable agriculture, and organic field crops production. The team members work together to address the needs of the farming community through the development of educational programs, educational materials, and training opportunities. The team's weekly "Field Crop News" newsletter addresses current issues related to field and forage crops production, and information about upcoming events. The newsletter is distributed via email, and you can register online for free. Â All the information generated by our team can be found on the Penn State Extension Website, under Food and Forage Crops. The team also maintains the Penn State Extension Field and Forage Crops Facebook page and a Penn State Extension Agronomy Team Instagram account, where educational articles, news, and videos are also available to the public.
Extension educators are based in county offices, however, not all county offices have an Agronomy Educators, but may have an educator who partners with our team to provide help in your adjacent county. If there is anything we can do to help, feel free to contact your closest Agronomy Educator:
