Unconventional Shale Gas Production for 2018 Exceeds 6 Tcf in Pennsylvania
For the first time, Pennsylvania unconventional natural gas production topped the 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) mark in 2018, reflecting a 14.2% increase from 2017. Conventional wells produced 0.9 Tcf in the same period. The Commonwealth's Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) states Pennsylvania maintains its second place behind Texas for state production, followed by Alaska, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Ohio. Highest county production in 2018 was Susquehanna, followed by Washington, Greene, Bradford and Lycoming counties. These top 6 counties alone produced three quarters of the state's gas production.
As of the end of December 2018, there were 8,911 producing wells with an additional estimated well inventory of 1,894. These wells include those that have to potential to produce but were not at the end of the year.
According to the Energy Information Association (EIA), Pennsylvania's natural gas consumption totaled 1.2 Tcf in 2008.
