Learn how to set up shop legally and safely. Direct-to-consumer (retail) sales outlets like retail farm markets, on-farm/roadside stands, and farmers markets let growers and food makers put their products right into the hands of customers. This marketing approach gives producers the freedom to determine their own prices, business hours, and product presentation. It also affords the opportunity to partner with local and regional producers, to give shoppers access to a variety of products. During What To Expect When You're Being Inspected, you will learn about the licensing and food safety requirements for opening and operating a direct-to-consumer retail market.

Our presenters from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will describe the role of your inspector, how often they will inspect your facility, what they will look for, and how to set up your business for compliance. You will learn how home-based processors can become licensed to use their home or farm kitchens to produce products that can be sold through these outlets. Basic rules for selling produce, value-added (canned) foods, eggs, and other products as well as facility requirements for sanitation and storage will all be reviewed. Registrants will have the opportunity to submit their questions to be answered during the event.

Questions must be submitted by February 28 using the link found in the confirmation email.

Funding for the Retail Farm Market School Series was made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service through grant 21FMPPA1052. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA.
