2021 Barley and Winter Wheat Performance Trials
This report provides independent and unbiased information for the evaluation of barley varieties available in Pennsylvania. The small grain evaluation program provides farmers, seed companies and university personnel with information on the relative performance of barley varieties grown under Pennsylvania conditions. It should be used to supplement other sources of information, such as seed industry performance tests, other independent testing data, and on-farm performance records, when making variety selection decisions.
In December 2020 after 23 years of service, Mark Antle, the technical support for this program, has retired. Mark has been successful in growing this program and has been a valuable asset. We thank him for his years of dedication and wish him the best in his retirement. In July 2021, we welcomed Kaleb Wolfe to fill Mark's position. Kaleb is a local to Centre County and grew up on a dairy farm outside of Centre Hall, PA. Kaleb has also spent the last 3 years as a research technologist in the long-term dairy cropping systems project. We look forward to having Kaleb on board and feel that his farm experience and research background will continue to help grow this program. With the long hiring process, weather, equipment setbacks, and learning curves, we were unable to harvest the Lancaster winter wheat this year. We are also missing some data that has been published in the past. We appreciate your understanding and patience this year, and hope that 2022 brings us better results.
