Induction of farrowing is a useful tool for pig farmers to improve offspring survival. However, correct use of induction tools, and deciding when to induce a sow is important for the tools to be useful and not harmful to the farrowing process. Farrowing Induction and Your Sows will focus on what happens when a sow is induced, and the details farmers and caretakers should be watching for to maintain sow welfare and piglet survival.
Included in this two-part program will be a virtual presentation from Dr. Kara Stewart, a swine extension specialist from Purdue University. After the virtual presentation, Dr. Elizabeth Hines, swine extension specialist from Penn State will lead the audience through some exercises in the safe use and handling of induction compounds and signs of efficacy during the farrowing process.
